Your USDA plant hardiness zone is a single number that tells you one thing: how cold your winters usually get. It is based on the average coldest temperature recorded at your location, and it predicts which perennial plants can survive that cold, winter after winter. The map behind the number is the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map, the standard reference gardeners and growers in the United States use to judge whether a plant can survive a given location’s winter. The current edition was released in 2023.

The zones are built from temperature history, not guesswork. Each location’s zone reflects its average annual extreme minimum temperature, the average of the single coldest night in each year, measured over the 30-year period from 1991 to 2020, according to the USDA map methodology. In plain terms: not the coldest night ever, and not a typical winter night, but the average of each year’s coldest moment across three decades.

There are 13 zones. Zone 1 is the coldest and zone 13 is the warmest, and each zone represents a 10-degree Fahrenheit band of that average coldest temperature. Every zone is then split into a warmer and a colder half, labeled “a” and “b,” each covering 5 degrees. So a full zone spans 10 degrees, and a half-zone spans 5. When someone says they garden in “zone 6b,” they are naming that narrower 5-degree slice.

Because the 2023 edition drew on newer data and finer mapping, roughly half of the country shifted into a warmer half-zone compared with the previous map, the USDA Agricultural Research Service reported. What your USDA plant hardiness zone does not tell you

This is where careful gardeners separate themselves from frustrated ones. Your zone answers exactly one question, “how cold does it get here in winter,” and it is silent on almost everything else that decides whether a plant does well.

It tells you nothing about summer heat, which can be as lethal to a plant as cold. It says nothing about how much rain you get, how humid your air is, how long your growing season runs, or what kind of soil sits under your feet. How to read a plant’s zone range

Once you know your own zone, plant tags start to make sense. Most perennials are sold with a hardiness range written as two numbers, a minimum zone and a maximum zone, for example “hardy in zones 4 to 8.”

The lower number is the one that protects your plant through winter. If a plant is rated to zone 4 and you garden in zone 6, its cold tolerance comfortably exceeds your winters, and it should overwinter in the ground. If your zone sits below a plant’s minimum, its roots or crown will likely not survive your coldest nights, so you would either give it winter protection, grow it in a pot you move indoors, or treat it as a one-season annual.

The upper number is a rough signal about heat. A plant listed only to zone 8 may struggle in the prolonged heat of zone 10, even though cold is not the problem there. Read the range as a survival window, not a promise of vigor. Falling inside a plant’s zone range means it can live through your climate’s extremes; whether it truly flourishes still depends on the light, water, and soil you give it.

Microclimates, ZIP codes, and other caveats

The map is a broad brush, and your yard is a specific place, so treat your zone as a strong starting point rather than a hard boundary.

A single ZIP code can straddle more than one half-zone, especially in hilly or coastal terrain where conditions change over short distances. If the map shows a line running near your address, check the interactive version closely and, when in doubt, plan for the colder of the two.

Your own property also has microclimates the national map cannot see. Elevation, a nearby lake or ocean, a south-facing masonry wall that stores daytime heat, or a low spot where cold air pools on still nights can each shift a planting site up to about half a zone warmer or colder than the map suggests. Cities add their own effect: the urban heat island, where pavement and buildings hold warmth, tends to nudge downtown gardens warmer than the surrounding countryside. None of this rewrites your zone, but it explains why the shrub that thrives against your neighbor’s warm brick wall sulks in your open, wind-exposed bed.

Finally, resist reading too much into the 2023 revision on its own. As noted, better data and finer mapping did much of the work of moving zones, so a warmer number on the new map is not the same thing as a measured trend at your address.
