Smart & Indoor Gardens: Which Pods Fit Yours (AeroGarden, Click & Grow, Gardyn, Rise)

Not every garden is outdoors. A countertop smart garden is the easiest way to grow herbs and greens inside – until you need more pods, run low on nutrients, or your brand’s supply gets unreliable. This is the Indoor side of the site: it tells you exactly which pods, grow sponges and nutrients fit your unit – including AeroGardens bought during the 2024-25 supply disruption – and, if you’re still shopping, which system is worth buying.

What a smart garden actually is (and the one fork that matters)

Strip off the app and the branding and a countertop unit is three parts: a water reservoir, a pump or a wick, and an LED hood on a timer. Almost every model on the shelf is then one of two designs, and which one you own decides everything about refills.

Net-cup hydroponics. A slotted plastic basket holds a peat or coir plug, and the roots grow down into nutrient water. AeroGarden, iDOO, VIVOSUN, LetPot, Gardyn, Rise and the vertical towers all work this way. There is nothing exotic about it. University of Minnesota Extension’s guide to small-scale hydroponics describes the same arrangement – a net pot is “a pot with holes or slits in the sides to allow the root system to reach the nutrient solution below,” partly submerged so the developing roots still get oxygen.

Soil-wick. Click & Grow is the main example: its pod is a peat and coir plug with the fertilizer already in it, and the machine wicks plain water up to that plug. It looks like the same appliance sitting on the same counter. It is not, and it takes different consumables.

After that, fitment is purely physical. Countertop baskets come in a round format – the de facto AeroGarden footprint that most generic refills copy – and a square format used by a handful of models, while tower systems use a larger net cup. Round refills do not seat in a square deck. So match the format and the deck-hole count before you match the brand name; that is the single most common mis-order. The AeroGarden supply disruption (and why your unit is fine either way)

AeroGarden was wound down by Scotts Miracle-Gro and then relaunched – it is not a dead brand. OEM seed pod kits, grow sponges, baskets and Liquid Plant Food are on sale again. What the wind-down left behind is a stretch of unreliable OEM availability, which is why so many owners learned to buy aftermarket – and never had to go back. An AeroGarden is just a deck of net baskets, a pump and a light: generic grow sponges and baskets fit the same holes, and any general hydroponic nutrient works. The aftermarket route stays the cheaper, supply-resilient option no matter what the brand does next.

On the OEM side of that question there is now a plain answer from the manufacturer: the Scotts help center states that its Seed Pod Kits are compatible with every model of AeroGarden. One basket format, one pod format, the whole line – which is also why the generics fit.

Feeding it: the nutrient is the most interchangeable layer

In any unit that feeds from a reservoir, the nutrient is the easiest thing to swap. The pump does not know whose bottle you poured in. What matters is that the nutrient is complete, and that word has a real meaning: UF/IFAS Extension’s hydroponic nutrient-solution guide sets out the 17 elements plants need for growth, which is why a hydroponic nutrient lists nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium plus calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron and the trace elements – and why a houseplant fertilizer that skips them is not a substitute. Mix to the strength on the nutrient’s own label, at each water change.

Two exceptions are worth knowing before you pour anything in:

  • A soil-wick garden is not a reservoir garden. Click & Grow warns that “adding fertilizers to the water tank could greatly reduce the wick’s viability,” and tells owners to apply plant food to the soil surface instead. Feed the pod, not the tank.
  • A reminder light is a timer, not a sensor. On units that prompt you to add nutrient, the prompt fires on a fixed schedule regardless of what is actually in the water. Once you are dosing on your own bottle’s schedule, obeying both will over-feed.

What this data can and cannot tell you

Most cross-brand fitment claims are not manufacturer statements. A retailer listing that says “compatible with AeroGarden” is a seller’s claim; an owner who has run generic sponges for two years is a community claim. Both are usually right, because the format is standard, and neither one is an OEM certification. We label every mapping with which kind it is instead of flattening them all into one confident answer. Consumable availability and brand status also move faster than any table can: ours is re-verified on a cadence, and where a spec could not be confirmed it is flagged rather than guessed.

Three limits are worth stating plainly, because a smart garden hides them behind a nice enclosure:

  • Indoors, your light is whatever you installed. UMN Extension notes that supplemental lighting is almost always necessary for growing indoors. The hood is the light source; a bright windowsill is a bonus, not a plan.
  • Pets reach a countertop before you do. Check every species you plant, by name, in the ASPCA toxic and non-toxic plant list, which records status separately for dogs, cats and horses. ASPCA lists a plant as toxic to a given animal or as non-toxic – it does not publish severity grades, so neither do we. If a pet has already chewed something, that is a call to your vet or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center, not a question for a web page.
  • A hardiness zone tells you nothing about your kitchen. The USDA map is built from a single number, the average annual extreme minimum winter temperature averaged over 1991-2020. That is outdoor winter cold and nothing else: not summer heat, not humidity, not rainfall, not soil. It matters only when you move a plant outside, and even then a ZIP code is a mail route rather than a climate boundary, so one ZIP can straddle two zones.

Do all pods fit all smart gardens?

No. Countertop decks use either a round basket – the AeroGarden footprint most generic refills copy – or a square sponge, and tower systems use a larger net cup. Match the physical format and the deck-hole count first, then worry about the name on the bag. The Which System Fits finder runs that check by model.

Can I use a generic nutrient instead of the brand’s own?

In any reservoir-fed unit, yes, provided it is a complete hydroponic nutrient and you mix it to its own label rather than the machine’s reminder light. The exception is a soil-wick garden such as Click & Grow, where the manufacturer warns against putting fertilizer in the water tank at all.

Can I plant my own seeds instead of buying pre-seeded pods?

Usually. Most brands sell a seedless or “grow anything” pod for exactly this, and any unit with a reusable basket takes a plain grow sponge or rooting plug plus your own seed. Where the nutrient lives in the plug rather than in the water, a homemade plug will eventually need feeding.

Do I need a sunny window?

No. The hood is the light source, and UMN Extension notes that supplemental lighting is almost always necessary indoors. Window light is a bonus rather than the plan, which is also why an indoor unit is the one garden your climate does not get a vote in.

Are the herbs in a starter kit safe around cats and dogs?

Do not assume so. Look up each species by name in the ASPCA toxic and non-toxic plant list before the garden goes anywhere a pet can reach, and remember the answer can differ for dogs, cats and horses. If something has already been chewed, call your vet or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center.
