Garden Conditions: Sun, Shade, Soil & Moisture (Match Plants to Your Yard)

Every plant that fails in a garden fails for the same quiet reason: it was put in the wrong spot. Not the wrong yard – the wrong spot. A sun-lover in shade grows leggy and never blooms; a shade plant in full afternoon sun scorches. This section is about reading the conditions you actually have – how much sun a bed gets, whether the soil runs dry or stays wet, which way it faces – so you can match a plant to the place instead of hoping. Those three readings are your garden conditions, and taking them is the work that happens before you pick a single plant.

Start with light

Light is the condition most people misjudge, because a yard that looks bright can still deliver well under three hours of true direct sun. Learn the standard hour thresholds and how to measure your own beds through the day and the seasons:

The thresholds come from cooperative extension, not from plant tags. The University of Minnesota Extension puts light shade or part shade at about 3 to 6 hours of sunlight and full shade at less than 3 hours, with deep shade below that and dappled shade describing light filtered through a tree canopy (University of Minnesota Extension). Everything above that band is full sun. The same guidance makes a point worth repeating: morning sun is less intense, while afternoon sun is stronger and comes with warmer temperatures. Six hours of morning light and six hours of afternoon light are not the same exposure, even though the tally matches.

Which is why one reading is not enough. Extension’s own advice is to spend time observing the light levels in your landscape and how they change through the day and the seasons (University of Minnesota Extension). A bed shaded by a fence in December can sit in open sun in June, and a spot that reads as full sun in April can drop into part shade once the tree above it leafs out.

Then soil moisture and aspect

Sun is only half of a spot. The other half is water: does the ground drain fast and dry out (a raised bed on a slope), hold even moisture (good loam), or stay damp (low ground near a downspout or a pond)? Pairing a plant’s water need with the spot’s moisture is the second axis the finder scores. Aspect – the direction a bed faces – ties the two together: south-facing runs hot and bright, north-facing cool and shaded, east gentle, west hot in the afternoon. (That pattern is Northern Hemisphere geometry; south of the equator it flips.)

Moisture is easier to read than most people expect, and you read it by watching rather than guessing. After a soaking rain, dig down a spade’s depth the next day and look at the bottom of the hole. Crumbly and already dry means a fast-draining spot that suits drought-tolerant plants. Evenly damp is the middle of the range, where most nursery stock is comfortable. Water still sitting in the hole means a genuinely wet site, and the honest answers there are a plant that wants wet feet or a raised bed – not a plant you install and hope for.

What garden conditions can and cannot tell you

Sun hours, soil moisture and aspect describe a spot well. They do not describe a climate, and your hardiness zone does not describe a spot. The USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map is built on the average annual extreme minimum winter temperature, shown as 10-degree F zones and 5-degree F half zones (USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map). That is average winter cold and nothing else. It says nothing about summer heat, humidity, rainfall, or the soil you are actually digging in. A plant can be rated for your zone and still fail in your July.

The map is also finer-grained than the way most people look it up. The 2023 version is drawn from 1991-2020 data on a computer grid whose cells are about half a mile on a side (USDA, how the map was made). A ZIP code covers far more ground than half a mile, so a single ZIP can fall across more than one zone, with the boundary running through a neighborhood. Treat a ZIP lookup as a starting point, not a verdict.

The finder carries the same ceiling, and we would rather say so than sell around it. A fit score compares a plant’s sourced sun and water needs against the spot you chose. It cannot see your drainage after a wet week, your soil pH, a buried slab of builder’s rubble, or the deer. It narrows a shortlist; it does not guarantee a plant. When the score and your own eyes disagree, trust your eyes – you have stood in that bed and the data has not. What are garden conditions?

The measurable properties of one specific spot: how many hours of direct sun it gets, how wet or dry the soil stays, and which way it faces. Conditions are a per-spot reading, not a whole-yard verdict. Two beds ten feet apart can suit completely different plants.

How do I measure the light in a bed?

Pick a clear day, check the bed every hour or two from morning to evening, note whether it is in direct sun or shade each time, and add up the direct-sun hours. Then repeat in another season, because extension guidance is explicit that light levels change through the day and across the seasons.

Does the direction a bed faces really matter?

Yes. In the Northern Hemisphere a south-facing bed is the brightest and hottest and a north-facing bed the coolest and shadiest, while east-facing beds get gentle morning sun and west-facing beds get hot afternoon sun. Morning and afternoon hours are not interchangeable even when the totals match.

Is my hardiness zone the same thing as my garden conditions?

No. The zone is one number describing average winter cold. Conditions are what a specific spot delivers all year. Two beds in the same zone, one in full sun and one in full shade, grow entirely different plants, and the zone map says nothing about summer heat, humidity, rainfall or soil.

Can I change a spot instead of changing the plant?

Partly. You can water, improve drainage in a bed, or add shade with a structure or a tree. You cannot meaningfully add sun to a north wall, and fighting a spot every season is more work than choosing something that already fits it.
